With the start Ravenna had in last Friday’s game at Centura, it probably wouldn’t have mattered if the Jays were playing the worst team in the LouPlatte Conference or the best, they were going to win. As it was, Ravenna owned an 85-39 victory to stay unbeaten at 16-0 this season.
Paul Beranek, Ravenna’s head coach said, “We came out with great focus and passion against Centura. It is a rivalry game, and you must be ready for their best effort, that way you can squelch any thought of an upset. Our guys were flying around again, causing the Centura players to get frustrated a bit. A few of them even showed it physically with a couple of extracurricular things. But that is part of the game. Sometimes our team gets frustrated and we must refocus and get back on track in order to get a few positives which is easier said than done.” .

Centura takes round two over Lady Jays

he second game for the Ravenna girls’ basketball team against perennial rival, Centura went the way the first one went—Centura’s. The Lady Jays had a rough time getting things going in both the first and third quarters in the 54-33 loss Friday night.
Ravenna’s only loss since their first game to Centura has been to Class C1 Minden, who incidentally is leading their class in the state polls. Centura is no slouch either as they are currently third in Class C2 with just one loss on the season.
Jeff Thober, Ravenna head coach, gave credit to Centura after the game, “Their defense did not allow our offense to operate the way we like to play. Our girls played good defense the whole game though, I was proud of them for that.”
By the time Alisa Pecka scored Ravenna’s first points, Centura was already in front 10-0. That field goal was Ravenna’s only points of the first quarter.

It was a mismatch from the start. Ravenna’s girls were simply too much for a one win D2 school. Grand Island’s Heartland Lutheran played their hearts out but Ravenna shot the ball outstanding and played their usual stout defense in taking a 69-25 win.
Karissa Finke continued her recent scoring tear, by leading all players with 31 points in the game. At the game’s outset, Finke scored 10 of Ravenna’s first 16 points in their 16-0 start. Grayce McDowell got into the scoring action early as well by making a steal and converting for two points on a lay-up for Ravenna’s tenth point.
The three point shot was especially kind to Finke as she made five in the game and three in the opening quarter alone. As a team, Ravenna made 10 treys in the contest to just one for the Red Hornets.

Bluejays run past Hornets 96-59

There is no truth to the rumor that the scoreboards at the Ravenna high gym burned out last Tuesday night. Although many times during the 96-59 Bluejay win over the Heartland Lutheran Hornets, the scoreboard was definitely overheated.
Ravenna came out firing on all cylinders in their 15th straight win this season. Head coach Paul Beranek said, “We came out with a lot of energy and the guys were focused. I was very proud of how our guys ran the floor and their tenaciousness on defense.”
Beranek continued, “We shot well as a team, but nothing great by any means. The 3-point percentage was good but we also missed a bunch of chip shots. Any mistake we made on one end of the floor was followed by a positive on the other end. The boys did a tremendous job of moving on to the next play.”
The first quarter saw Ravenna play probably their best eight minutes of basketball all year. They took a 30-6 lead on a 12-4 team that knows how to score points. The Jays outscored the Hornets18-1 to end the quarter after taking a 12-5 lead early in the opening moments of the game.
